The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has announced sweeping changes to its top leadership, with Duduzane Zuma, the son of former President Jacob Zuma, appointed as the party’s new First Deputy President with immediate effect.
The announcement was made during a media briefing on Tuesday by party spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu, who said the reshuffle is aimed at strengthening the organisation and consolidating its structures ahead of future political activities.
Duduzane Zuma replaces John Hlophe, who has been relieved of his deputy presidential responsibilities. Despite the change, Hlophe will continue serving as the leader of the MK Party in the National Assembly.
The leadership shake-up extends beyond the deputy presidency. Deputy Secretary-General Nomsa Dlamini has been removed and replaced by Lindiwe Mtshali, while National Chairperson Nkosinathi Nhleko has been succeeded by Reverend Mxolisi Phakathi.
Veteran politician Tony Yengeni retains his position as the party’s Second Deputy President.
Meanwhile, Willis Mchunu has been appointed to the party’s presidential collective while continuing to serve as the MK Party’s provincial leader in KwaZulu-Natal.
The reshuffle marks one of the most significant leadership changes within the MK Party since its formation, signalling a renewed focus on strengthening its leadership as it prepares for upcoming political challenges.
