CAPE TOWN – Tony Forbes says he remains convinced that his late son, rapper AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Forbes, was not responsible for the death of his fiancée, Anele Tembe, as an inquest into her death gets underway in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court.
The inquest, which begins on Monday, comes five years after Tembe’s death and is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Forbes described the proceedings as a vital step in the legal process, saying his family has been waiting for the opportunity for all the evidence to be presented and tested in court.
Speaking to eNCA, Forbes said he believes the inquest will provide a fair and balanced platform to establish the facts, maintaining that the information available to the family supports AKA’s innocence.
“We are absolutely convinced that Kiernan did not murder his fiancée. And the information that we’ve had has proven that,” Forbes said.
He also criticised what he described as efforts to shape public opinion through media reports, arguing that evidence relating to the case should be presented in court rather than debated publicly.
Forbes added that the information emerging ahead of the inquest is not new, revealing that he has released text messages involving AKA, Anele Tembe and a lawyer representing the Tembe family, which he says raise questions about the events leading up to Tembe’s death.
The inquest is expected to hear evidence from various witnesses as the court seeks to determine the circumstances surrounding Tembe’s death.
