Boxing South Africa (BSA) has acted swiftly following public outrage after Dylan Prosser was declared the winner of the vacant South African super-middleweight title fight against Snamiso Ntuli at Makers Landing in Cape Town on Saturday.
Prosser secured a split-decision victory, with judges Sipho Ndongeni and Sivuyile Ngwevela scoring the bout 116-112 in his favour, while Clifford Mbelu saw it 117-111 for Ntuli. In a statement released on Monday, BSA acknowledged the backlash from boxing stakeholders over the outcome of the April 18 bout, staged during the Fight Island event by Insane Boxing Promotions.
“The contest, a gruelling 12-round battle, saw Mr Prosser declared the winner by split decision. BSA acknowledges the dissatisfaction expressed by Mr Ntuli’s corner and the broader boxing community,” the organisation said. BSA confirmed the fight will undergo a formal review in line with the South African Boxing Act and its regulations.
An independent panel of three judges from different provinces will be appointed to assess the full fight footage against official scoring criteria, with the panel’s decision set to be final. The organisation stressed that officiating remains a key concern and is undergoing reform.
“A Ring Officiating Technical Panel has already been appointed to oversee training, grading and accountability of referees and judges. This forms part of BSA’s zero-tolerance approach to technical negligence,” the statement added. BSA reiterated its commitment to fairness, transparency and integrity, with the outcome of the review to be announced in due course.
This is the second time the BSA has moved to review the decision, following widespread outrage over Siyabulela “Showtime” Hem’s points victory against Bongani “Wonderboy” Mahlangu in their national junior featherweight title bout at the Vodacom Dome in Pretoria last September.
The two met again four months later, with Hem once more claiming victory in their rematch at the Orient Theatre in the Eastern Cape.
