The sensitive issue of illegal immigration and deportation in South Africa took an unexpected turn over the weekend, as comedians used humour to address it at the 3460 International Comedy Festival in Durban. The two-day event, organised by popular comedian Thenjiwe Mosley, drew large crowds and featured performers from across Africa.

It was held at the BAT Centre, where audiences were left laughing throughout the night.Several comedians tackled the topic of immigration, joking about stereotypes and challenges faced by foreign nationals living in South Africa. While the subject is often controversial, the performers used comedy to spark conversation and entertain at the same time.

Masapo from Lesotho had the audience in stitches with jokes about avoiding campaigns like Operation Dudula. He humorously said he blends in by singing isiZulu hymns in rural areas. His playful story about his sister’s large feet also drew loud laughter.Thapelo Malani from Botswana, who is visually impaired, touched hearts while making light-hearted jokes about his life and experiences.

His performance stood out for combining humour with inspiration. Zambian comedian Gabbi grabbed attention with bold, adult-themed jokes, while Nonto R followed a similar style, prompting some parents to briefly usher children away from the stage.Other comedians who impressed the crowd included Mudura from Eswatini, Chingliz from Zambia, Carvin Goldstone from Newlands East, and TT Pasha. TT Pasha amused the audience with a joke questioning why ancestors are often believed to have hoarse voices.

Mosley said the festival was not only about laughter but also about creating opportunities for young comedians. He explained that a separate showcase was held to give emerging talent a platform to grow and build confidence.

Young performers from Mashu, known as Salad and Gap, were recognised and awarded medals for their performances.

Mosley thanked supporters and said he plans to continue hosting similar events across South Africa and neighbouring countries, promoting cultural exchange through comedy.
