The eThekwini Municipality has intensified its service delivery with the accelerated “Blitz” programme, focusing on overgrown vegetation and enhancing the state of public spaces throughout Durban. The most recent operation, conducted in the southern part of the city, involved municipal teams clearing thick vegetation, pruning trees, and removing overhanging branches along major roads and important routes.

This intervention has already led to better visibility and accessibility, making the roads safer for drivers, pedestrians, and public transport operators. Municipal spokesperson Lindiwe Mkhize stated that this initiative is part of the City’s dedication to keeping public spaces clean, safe, and inviting.

“The Blitz programme enables us to quickly address areas that need immediate attention. We are focusing on safety while also protecting the natural environment,” she mentioned. Residents have expressed their appreciation for the improvements. “The roads were becoming hazardous due to low-hanging branches and obstructed views,” remarked Sipho Dlamini, a commuter from Umlazi. “Now it’s much easier and safer to drive.” Local business owner Thandi Naidoo noted that cleaner surroundings benefit the community. “It makes a significant difference.

Customers feel more at ease in a well-kept area,” she stated. The municipality has confirmed that the programme will extend to other regions of eThekwini in the upcoming weeks.
