A senior football commentator at SuperSport has reportedly been taken off air for three months after a remark made during a live Betway Premiership broadcast triggered a storm of criticism and formal complaints.
Sources inside the broadcaster’s headquarters in Randburg told ILANGA that commentator Phumlani Miya was suspended following comments made while covering the March 3 clash between Richards Bay FC and Kaizer Chiefs at Mhlathuze Sports Complex.
The controversy erupted when Richards Bay forward Lindi Mahala became involved in an on-field confrontation with Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy. As tensions flared, Miya allegedly remarked on air that the “coloured nation is known for war and will not back down,” a statement many viewers interpreted as a racial stereotype.
Within minutes, clips of the moment spread rapidly across social media platforms, drawing sharp criticism from fans and civil society groups. Several viewers reportedly lodged complaints with the South African Human Rights Commission and contacted Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie demanding accountability.
For many listeners, the moment was deeply personal. One Cape Town supporter told ILANGA the remark felt like “being reduced to a stereotype during a match meant to unite people through sport.”
Miya later issued a public apology on Facebook to the Premier Soccer League, McCarthy and members of the coloured community.
A spokesperson for SuperSport, Sibusiso Mjikeliso, confirmed the matter is under internal review.
“As SuperSport under MultiChoice and Canal+, we are aware of concerns raised by viewers. The matter is being dealt with internally,” he said.
