DERBY DELAYED: Pirates vs Chiefs Shifted to Sunday to Dodge Festival Frenzy

Sport

The highly anticipated Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs has been moved to Sunday, 26 April, after organisers acted swiftly to avoid a major scheduling clash with a large-scale music event.

Originally set for Saturday, 25 April, the fixture will now take place at FNB Stadium, with Pirates hosting their long-time rivals. The change was confirmed by the Buccaneers via their official social media platforms on Thursday.

The rescheduling comes in response to the Ultra Music Festival Johannesburg, scheduled for the same day at the nearby Nasrec Expo Centre. The festival is expected to attract around 20,000 attendees and features international stars including DJ Snake, Afrojack, John Summit and Axwell.

With both venues located side by side, concerns over crowd control, traffic congestion, and safety prompted urgent discussions. Stadium Management South Africa had indicated that talks were planned, but a decision was reached ahead of schedule.

The new date may prove popular among fans, as it precedes Freedom Day on 27 April, giving supporters extra time to recover after one of the country’s biggest sporting spectacles, which regularly draws close to 90,000 spectators.
