Algerian football club MC Alger has confirmed that South African coach Rulani Mokwena has left his position with immediate effect after activating a clause in his contract.

Mokwena joined the club at the start of the current season following his departure from Moroccan giants Wydad AC. The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach departs with the team sitting at the top of the Algerian Ligue 1 standings.

In a statement issued on the club’s official social media platforms on Saturday, MC Alger said the decision followed discussions between Mokwena and the club’s management.

“The management of MC Alger announces the departure of South African coach Rulani Mokwena from the club’s technical team following the activation of the clause that terminates his duties as head coach,” the club said.

According to the statement, Mokwena opted to end his tenure after eight months in charge, with the contract stipulating that he must compensate the club with two months’ salary should he leave before its expiry.

During his spell in Algeria, Mokwena guided MC Alger to the Algerian Super Cup title and maintained the team’s position at the top of the league table. However, the club exited both the Algerian Cup and the CAF Champions League under his leadership.

Mokwena, who has also coached Orlando Pirates and Chippa United, has recently been linked with a possible move to Libyan giants Al‑Ittihad Tripoli.

MC Alger thanked Mokwena and his technical staff for their efforts and wished them success in their future careers.
