Cape Town – Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has ignited a political controversy after showing up at a session of the Western Cape Provincial Legislature in cycling shorts, shoes, and bright pink socks.
The unconventional outfit faced backlash from the African National Congress (ANC), which labeled the clothing as unsuitable and disrespectful to the institution.

ANC provincial spokesperson Khalid Sayed stated that the premier’s attire undermined the dignity and decorum expected in the legislature. “While we acknowledge the premier’s dedication to cycling and healthy living, his choice of clothing during an official session is an affront to the decorum of the house,” Sayed remarked.

He further suggested that the speaker should have requested Winde to leave the chamber and return dressed appropriately. On the other hand, Winde’s office defended the choice, clarifying that the premier had cycled earlier that morning to participate in an event promoting the Cape Town Cycle Tour and a global melanoma screening initiative.

His spokesperson, Regan Thaw, mentioned that Winde intended to raise awareness about health, fitness, and the advantages of cycling.
South Africa’s legislatures do not enforce strict dress codes, but members are expected to uphold the dignity of the house. Most lawmakers typically wear formal attire or traditional clothing during sessions.

This incident has heightened political tensions between the ANC and the Democratic Alliance in light of the upcoming election campaigns.
