A driver suspected of a hit-and-run was arrested in the Durban Central Business District after hitting a pedestrian and leaving him injured on a busy street.

Members of the Durban Metro Police Service Operational Response Services (ORS) night shift responded to reports of a crash at the intersection of Anton Lembede Street and Dorothy Nyembe Street. Officers stated that a Volkswagen Polo struck a male pedestrian before the driver fled the scene without offering assistance.

Police quickly shared the vehicle’s details with patrol units. Within minutes, officers found and stopped the suspected vehicle a few blocks away at the corner of Anton Lembede Street and Yusuf Dadoo Street.

The driver was arrested and taken to the Durban Central Police Station, where the South African Police Service will carry on with the investigation.

Authorities reminded drivers that leaving the scene of an accident is a serious crime and that they are legally obligated to stop and help after any collision.
