THE continued efforts by eThekwini Municipality Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba to reduce water leaks and sewer spillages is gaining momentum as he returned to uMlazi today, to extend the service delivery intervention programme to Wards 83, 85, 86 and 87.
Mayor Xaba was on the ground leading a high-level inspection of municipal water and sanitation infrastructure with a multi-disciplinary team of officials.
During the inspection, Mayor Xaba was pleased to find water and sanitation teams at various sites repairing water leaks and flushing severe sewer network blockages.
“Our teams are active on the ground working on reported cases of water leaks and sewer spillages. We encourage responsiveness which is what our communities need. If we continue in this manner, we will achieve a further reduction of leaks,” he said.
The citywide intervention is part of the Municipality’s accelerated programme to restore critical public infrastructure by deploying teams to areas affected by persistent water leaks and sewer spillages.
Mayor Xaba urged community members to safeguard their infrastructure by stopping the disposal of foreign objects in sewer manholes.
He also warned that public infrastructure misuse remains a primary driver of recurring sewer system blockages across the municipality.
Furthermore, Mayor Xaba encouraged residents to report illegal water connections, which overload existing water and sanitation infrastructure to toll-free number 080 311 1111, send a WhatsApp message to 073 1483 477 or email Services@durban.gov.za
Two weeks ago, Mayor visited uMlazi’s Wards 80, 81 and 88 where he announced that the number of reported leaks had decreased significantly from 13 000 to 3900 since the start of the programme two months ago.
