Former eThekwini mayor and ANC member Zandile Gumede has officially joined the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, marking another high-profile political shift in KwaZulu-Natal.
The announcement was made by the party’s Secretary-General Sibonelo Nomvalo, who confirmed Gumede’s appointment as the MK Party’s deputy convenor in the province of KZN. Her move comes after years of being associated with the African National Congress (ANC), where she held influential leadership positions in both the municipality and the party. Gumede’s appointment is expected to strengthen the MK Party’s structures in KwaZulu-Natal ahead of future political campaigns, while adding to the growing list of former ANC members who have joined the organisation.
Political analysts say her defection could have implications for the ANC’s support base in the province, where internal divisions have continued to reshape the political landscape.
Neither the ANC nor Gumede had issued detailed public comments on the reasons for her departure at the time of publication. The development is expected to intensify political competition in KwaZulu-Natal. While other political parties are expected to announce their candidates for leadership positions.
