Boxing enthusiasts gathered in large numbers at Sibusisiwe Hall in Mandeni on Saturday for a much-anticipated tournament organized by the Dr Nompumelelo Nkosi-Ntombela Foundation.
Local favorite Khanyisani Mbokazi won against Tholumuzu Ngema by points in an eight-round junior lightweight match, even while dealing with an injury above his right eye.
Mbokazi mentioned that he is now aiming for the lightweight division and aspires to compete for a national title.
The evening also featured Nolwazi Mabaso from Hammarsdale winning the KZN Featherweight title after defeating Mandeni’s Misiwe Ndlovu by points. Ndlovu’s coach, Alson Nkosi, stated that the team would learn from their mistakes and come back stronger.
Promoter Dr Nkosi-Ntombela took the opportunity to raise awareness about gender-based violence while allowing emerging boxers to display their skills.
Other victors included Sduduzo Mthiyane, Lihle Soga, Tsitso Thupa, and Lumka Ntobela.The tournament proceeded despite last-minute sponsor withdrawals, with organizers receiving backing from various government departments and community leaders.
