The 2026 KZN Premier Cup got off to an exciting start at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday, with football fans treated to entertaining matches as KwaZulu-Natal’s top clubs began their pre-season campaigns.
The tournament, which celebrates the province’s rich football heritage, continues to provide clubs with an opportunity to prepare for the new season while showcasing local talent.
In the opening match, newly promoted Milford FC made a dream start by defeating Lamontville Golden Arrows 1-0. Milford’s disciplined performance earned them a memorable victory in their first appearance in the competition.
Midfielder Yanelisa Nomandela was named Man of the Match after an outstanding display. He credited his coach’s guidance for giving him the confidence to perform at his best.
“I am proud of the team. The coach’s advice helped me, and we worked hard together to get this important win,” said Nomandela.
The second match saw defending champions Richards Bay FC edge Durban City FC 5-4 in a penalty shootout after the teams failed to score during normal time.
The victory kept Richards Bay’s hopes of retaining the title alive.
AmaZulu FC also impressed, beating Midlands Wanderers 2-0 to secure their place in the final. Head coach Arthur Zwane praised his players for carrying out the game plan.
“It was a very good performance. We wanted to play good football, and the players delivered,” said Zwane.
Supporters welcomed the high standard of football, with fan Ayanda Ncwane saying the matches showed the strength of football in KwaZulu-Natal.
The tournament now moves into its decisive stage, with Milford FC and Richards Bay FC set to battle for a place in the final, while AmaZulu await their opponents in the championship match.
