Durban has taken a significant step towards hosting matches during the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup after the eThekwini Municipality approved a Host City Agreement with Cricket South Africa and allocated R600 000 for tournament preparations.
The tournament, scheduled to run from October 4 to November 21, 2027, will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. The agreement authorises the city manager to sign the host contract, while the Executive Director for Community Services will oversee its implementation.
Municipal spokesperson Mandla Nsele said hosting the global tournament is expected to attract international visitors, media attention, commercial partners and cricket supporters to Durban.
The city anticipates the event will stimulate the local economy by creating business opportunities, supporting job creation and promoting skills development. The initial R600 000 allocation will fund preparatory activities, with additional operational requirements to be incorporated into future municipal budgets as planning for the international sporting spectacle progresses.
