Pitch Perfect Pause: Moses Mabhida Turf Gets Critical April Overhaul

Sport

Durban — The iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium has temporarily shut its playing surface as the city undertakes urgent rehabilitation work aimed at restoring the pitch to world-class standards ahead of a busy May sporting calendar.
The eThekwini Municipality confirmed on Wednesday that the field will remain closed until 30 April 2026. Officials described the intervention as essential maintenance designed to revive the turf after sustained use and ensure it meets professional requirements for upcoming fixtures.
Municipal spokespersons emphasised that while the pitch itself is off-limits, the stadium remains open to the public. Visitor attractions, retail outlets and general operations will continue uninterrupted during the maintenance period.
“This programme reflects our ongoing commitment to maintaining Moses Mabhida as a premier sporting and events destination,” the city said in a statement, adding that the work is carefully scheduled to avoid disruption to major events.
The temporary closure comes as Durban prepares for a packed events season, with expectations that the upgraded surface will provide safer, higher-quality playing conditions.
Residents and visitors have been urged to cooperate during the rehabilitation period as efforts continue to preserve one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
