Zwane, 52, is no stranger to the national team setup, having previously served as an assistant coach under Molefi Ntseki before Broos took charge.
Since leaving Chiefs, Zwane has rebuilt Usuthu into a competitive side, although he has yet to match the club’s highest achievement under Benni McCarthy, who led AmaZulu to runners-up finish in the 2020/21 PSL season and qualification for the CAF Champions League.
It has also emerged that Rulani Mokwena and Benni McCarthy—two coaches widely backed by supporters for the Bafana Bafana job—are not among the candidates being considered as the South African Football Association (SAFA) intensifies its search for Broos’ successor.
Three-time CAF Champions League-winning coach Pitso Mosimane has formally submitted his application to return to the Bafana Bafana hot seat. Mosimane previously coached the national team between 2010 and 2012.
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, has publicly thrown his support behind Mosimane’s candidacy.
Meanwhile, Mokwena is currently in charge of Libyan club Al Ittihad SC, while McCarthy, Bafana Bafana’s all-time leading goalscorer, is the head coach of Kenya. He is spearheading the country’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania, making the project one of the nation’s top football priorities.
