The Umgungundlovu District rolled out the red carpet for some of its finest talents as former football stars and cultural figures were honoured at a glittering ceremony in Pietermaritzburg.
The Legends Music Experience, held at City Hall on Thursday night, brought together icons from sport, arts and literature in an event aimed at recognising their contributions to society. Among those celebrated were former professional footballers Andile Cele, Mbulelo Mabizela, Bryce Moon and Sandile Ndlovu.
The quartet earned praise for helping put KwaZulu-Natal football on both the national and international stage. Mabizela notably captained Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana, and also had a stint with Tottenham Hotspur in England. Moon, meanwhile, featured in the prestigious UEFA Champions League during his time playing in Greece, while Ndlovu and Cele became fan favourites at Mamelodi Sundowns and Pirates respectively.
The event also honoured acclaimed actress Thuso Mbedu, alongside notable figures in radio, music and literature including Sbusi Jili, Brian Zuma, Bhodloza Nzimande, Themba Mokoena, Joel Zuma, Vusi Ximba, Mvuselelo Buthelezi, Makitaza, Gcina Mhlophe, Dr Nakanjani Sibiya and Botsotso Mahlaba.
District Mayor Mzi Zuma praised organisers for celebrating local excellence and confirmed that the initiative would become an annual event. He also urged honourees to use their influence to help combat gender-based violence and uplift communities through sport and social development.
The evening marked a powerful celebration of talent, legacy and community pride in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal.
