Rising Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been urged to remain humble despite his growing fame at Chicago Fire FC in the United States. The former Bafana Bafana captain Mbulelo Mabizela cautioned the young defender, popularly known as “TLB”, not to be consumed by success as his career gathers momentum in Major League Soccer.
Mbokazi, who recently joined Chicago Fire from Orlando Pirates, has quickly become a fan favourite and a key figure in his new squad. The Hluhluwe-born player is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s brightest defensive prospects.
Speaking at the Legends Music Experience in Pietermaritzburg, Mabizela said while he would not compare their careers, he believes Mbokazi has the potential to surpass his achievements.“He is a talented player with a bright future. Not many players get past him easily,” said Mabizela.
“But football can lift you up and bring you down just as quickly. It all depends on how you conduct yourself.”Mabizela stressed the importance of discipline, humility and choosing the right company, warning that poor decisions off the pitch can derail even the most promising careers.
Drawing from his own experience, Mabizela’s message serves as a cautionary tale — a reminder that talent alone is not enough to sustain success at the highest level.
