
Durban – South Africa’s biggest music celebration reached new heights as the 20th METRO FM Music Awards (MMAs) lit up the Durban ICC on Saturday night, honouring the country’s finest musical talent in a glittering ceremony. Hosted by Lerato Kganyago and Lawrence Maleka, the awards coincided with the 40th anniversary of METRO FM, adding a historic layer to an already electric evening broadcast live on SABC 1 and streamed on SABC+.
Rising star Ciza emerged as one of the night’s biggest winners, scooping both Artist of the Year and Best Male Artist. Meanwhile, Shandesh claimed Best Female Artist, cementing her growing influence in the industry. Dance duo Thukuthela & Jazzworld dominated with three awards, including Best Produced Album, Best Dance, and Best Duo or Group, marking them as standout performers of the night.
Newcomer Kharishma also impressed, taking home Best New Artist. The ceremony featured high-energy performances from artists such as DJ Tira, Nomfundo Hlophe, and Nkosazana Daughter, reflecting the diversity and vibrancy of Mzansi’s music scene. Legendary group Ladysmith Black Mambazo received the Global Icon award, while radio veteran Wilson B Nkosi was honoured with the Long Service Award for his contribution to broadcasting.
Maskandi icon Ihashi Elimhlophe received a Lifetime Achievement Award, earning a standing ovation for his decades-long influence on traditional music.The night concluded with UMafikizolo winning Song of the Year for “Uyoncengwa Unyoko,” closing off a celebration that paid tribute to both emerging and legendary voices shaping South African music.
