Teaching and learning conditions at Umzinyathi Primary School have improved significantly following the donation of two prefabricated classrooms by Isibaya Trust.

The rural school in Inanda had been battling severe overcrowding, with some classrooms accommodating up to 85 learners. Principal Mondli Mchunu said the situation had placed immense strain on both learners and educators.

“Our school has experienced a rapid increase in enrolment due to population growth and the quality of education we offer. Many parents have transferred their children from neighbouring areas such as Phoenix,” he explained.

With only two primary schools in the surrounding area, the pressure on resources has been intense. Overcrowded classrooms not only hinder effective teaching but also affect learners’ health and concentration.

“When classrooms are packed, children struggle to breathe and focus. It becomes a barrier to quality education and impacts their future,” Mchunu added.

A trustee of Isibaya Trust, Sorisha Naidoo, praised the school for proactively seeking assistance. She highlighted that the trust allocates funding through its Corporate Social Investment programme linked to Isibaya Casino.

“We have set aside R350 million for community upliftment initiatives, including education. Schools and organisations are encouraged to apply for support,” Naidoo said.

The newly installed classrooms are expected to ease congestion and create a more conducive learning environment. Teachers have already reported improved engagement among learners.

Education stakeholders say the intervention is a reminder of the vital role partnerships play in strengthening rural schools.

“A classroom is more than just a structure,” Mchunu said. “It is a space where ideas are nurtured, confidence is built, and future leaders are shaped.”
