Paddle Power Keeps Youth Afloat This Easter

Sport

As the Easter holidays approach, schools and sports organisations are intensifying efforts to keep young people off the streets through structured sporting events, highlighted by the success of Paddle Fest 2026 at Durban Undersea Club.

The event, organised by South Africa Surf Ski and supported by sponsors, drew school learners and experienced paddlers from across KwaZulu-Natal, including Durban, Ballito and Pietermaritzburg. Young athletes like Keegan Vogt and Grace Holloway-Mulder led the charge, showcasing the growing strength of youth participation in paddling.

Organisers say the timing is critical, with school holidays often leaving children unsupervised and vulnerable to negative influences. By hosting competitive and inclusive sporting events, they aim to provide safe, engaging alternatives.

The 8km race and additional events offered opportunities for both beginners and advanced paddlers, encouraging discipline, teamwork and healthy competition. More than 50% of participants were girls, reflecting increased inclusivity in school sport.

Event coordinator Barry Lewin emphasised that initiatives like Paddle Fest form part of a broader plan to develop youth pathways in sport nationwide.

With more regional events planned, organisers hope to keep momentum going throughout the Easter break, ensuring that sport remains a powerful tool to guide youth away from the streets and towards a brighter future.
