Pretoria — National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has been summoned to appear in court on April 21 over his alleged involvement in the controversial R360 million Medicare24 SAPS tender. The development was confirmed on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, amid an ongoing investigation into corruption, fraud, and irregular procurement processes within the South African Police Service.
The case, which has drawn national attention, involves 16 accused individuals, including 12 senior SAPS officials, a businessman alleged to be a criminal kingpin, and associated entities. They appeared before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court earlier on Wednesday facing charges of fraud, corruption, and money laundering.
Authorities allege that the tender awarding process was manipulated, raising serious concerns about transparency and accountability within the police service. While most of the accused were granted bail ranging from R40,000 to R80,000, one key suspect remains in custody.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said Masemola has acknowledged the charges and is cooperating fully with the legal process. She added that the commissioner remains committed to upholding the rule of law.
The case is expected to test public trust in law enforcement leadership as investigations continue.
