Residents in certain areas of eThekwini are experiencing temporary water shortages due to vandalism at the Prospecton Water Pump Station, an essential facility that provides water to the Athlone Park Reservoir. Municipal officials have confirmed that damage to both mechanical and electrical panels has stopped pumping operations, leaving many communities without consistent water supply.
This disruption is impacting homes and businesses in Athlone Park, Amanzimtoti, Umbogintwini, and Orient Hills. Numerous residents have voiced their frustration, with some mentioning challenges in performing daily tasks like cooking, sanitation, and small-scale trading. Local shopkeepers report that the outage is already affecting sales, especially for food-related businesses that depend heavily on water.
Technical teams from the eThekwini Municipality Water Services Directorate are currently on site working to fix the system. Repairs are anticipated to be finished later today, providing hope for a quick return to normal water supply.
Community leaders have requested enhanced security at vital infrastructure locations, cautioning that ongoing vandalism puts unnecessary pressure on essential services and vulnerable residents.
The municipality has expressed regret for the inconvenience and has encouraged residents to report issues through official communication channels while repair efforts are underway.
