The death toll at a construction site in Johannesburg has risen to nine after the body of the last missing worker was recovered on Tuesday, bringing the search operation to a close.

Rescue teams have been working tirelessly at the collapsed site in Ormonde since Monday afternoon, when a concrete slab on the second-floor deck gave way and trapped workers beneath the rubble.

Emergency services, including Johannesburg Emergency Management Services and the South African Police Service, were dispatched to the scene shortly after the incident and remained on site throughout the recovery effort.

Earlier on Tuesday, EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo confirmed that the death toll had reached eight, with one person still unaccounted for at the time.

The discovery of the ninth victim later in the day marked a tragic end to the operation. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated. The death toll was six on Monday night, rose to eight on Tuesday morning, and has now been confirmed at nine.
