EThekwini Municipality yesterday, 16 October, officially reopened the refurbished 50-metre Umlazi BB Swimming Pool and handed over newly developed combi courts, marking a significant investment in community recreation, sports development, and youth empowerment ahead of the festive season.
The swimming pool underwent extensive repairs following significant damage that necessitated a major rehabilitation. The refurbishment was implemented in three phases, with the first phase commencing in May 2025.
The upgraded facility includes a dedicated children’s swimming pool, expanding opportunities for young swimmers to learn water safety and develop their swimming skills in a suitable environment.
The refurbished pool adds to the 43 swimming pools currently operational across eThekwini, reinforcing the municipality’s commitment to maintain and improve public recreational facilities for residents.
Beyond swimming, the precinct has been transformed into a hub for sporting talent and youth development.
The municipality has redesigned and constructed a sports complex featuring multi-purpose courts for basketball, tennis, netball, volleyball, and indoor soccer.
These facilities are intended to advance sporting activities and a healthy lifestyle.
During the official opening, Chairperson of the Community Services Committee, Councillor Zama Sokhabase said: “Through these facilities, we want to nurture sporting talent, provide young people with opportunities to develop their skills, and keep them away from the streets. Sport plays an important role in building discipline, promoting healthy lifestyles, and creating positive pathways for our youth.
“We encourage the community to take ownership of these facilities, use them responsibly, and protect them against vandalism so that they can benefit generations to come.”
The City urges swimmers to always obey instructions from pool attendants and lifeguards on duty and to exercise caution. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to supervise children closely, particularly in and around the swimming pool.
The reopening of the Umlazi BB Swimming Pool and the handover of the multi-sports courts underscore the importance of investing in accessible public facilities that promote recreation, social cohesion, community well-being, and the development of future sporting talent.
