Preparations for this year’s Reed Dance, or Umkhosi Womhlanga, are nearing completion ahead of the annual cultural event scheduled to take place at King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s royal palace in Machobeni, uMkhanyakude, from September 4 to 5.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Mntomuhle Khawula said there was now “no turning back” as all preparations appeared to be on track.The update followed a coordination meeting held at the uMkhanyakude District Municipality offices on Tuesday. The meeting brought together representatives from the royal household, traditional leadership, security structures and government departments involved in the event.
Prince Thulani “Mnyovu” of Zibindini highlighted the historical significance of the Reed Dance in Ngwavuma. He said the event was established by the late King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu following concerns raised by traditional leaders about high rates of teenage pregnancy among schoolgirls in the uMkhanyakude area.
uMkhanyakude District Municipality Mayor Siphile Mdaka welcomed the event, saying its timing during KwaZulu-Natal’s Tourism Month would provide opportunities for emerging businesses and showcase the region’s cultural heritage.
The Reed Dance remains an important celebration of Zulu culture, tradition and the role of young women in preserving heritage.
