DURBAN, 19 August 2026 — A disturbing video showing a nurse allegedly assaulting a patient at King Dinuzulu Hospital has raised difficult questions about dignity, compassion and the trust placed in healthcare workers.
The footage, which has circulated widely on social media, appears to show the nurse striking the patient in the face while making inappropriate remarks.
For a patient entering a hospital, vulnerability is often unavoidable. They depend on healthcare workers not only for treatment, but also for compassion, patience and protection.
An alleged assault in such an environment therefore cuts deeper than a physical blow—it can undermine the very trust on which healthcare depends.
The Department of Health has strongly condemned the incident, describing the conduct as unacceptable and inconsistent with the values of the healthcare system.
The nurse will be placed on precautionary suspension with immediate effect while an internal investigation is conducted.
The Department said corporal punishment has no place in its facilities and assured the public that appropriate disciplinary action will follow should the investigation substantiate the allegations.The incident serves as a sobering reminder that behind every hospital bed is a person deserving of dignity, regardless of their circumstances.
