Chatsworth House Fire Claims One Life as Swift Response Saves Another

A quiet early morning in Montford, Chatsworth, turned tragic on Friday when a house fire claimed the life of one resident and left another hospitalised.

eThekwini Municipality Fire and Emergency Services were called to the double-storey home at about 05h30 after flames engulfed both floors. Firefighters arrived to find the residence fully ablaze, with thick smoke and intense heat making the rescue operation extremely dangerous.

Despite the terrifying conditions, one occupant managed to escape the burning house. The resident suffered smoke inhalation and was treated by emergency medical personnel before being transported to hospital for further care.A male occupant was not as fortunate.

Firefighters found him inside the home with extensive burn injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control approximately 20 minutes after arriving, preventing the flames from causing further damage to surrounding areas.The South African Police Service and emergency medical teams also attended the scene.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, with Fire Safety Services investigating its origin.The municipality has extended condolences to the deceased’s family and wished the injured resident a speedy recovery.
