Residents, commuters, and business owners in Durban’s city centre can look forward to smoother and safer roads as major rehabilitation projects continue to make progress. On Thursday evening, the Chairperson of the Human Settlements, Engineering and Transport Committee, Councillor Themba Mvubu, conducted an oversight visit to inspect the start of rehabilitation works on Dr Pixley kaIsaka Seme Street in the Durban CBD.
The project forms part of eThekwini Municipality’s Inner-City Road Rehabilitation Programme, which aims to restore and modernise key roads in the city centre. The programme is expected to improve road safety, ease traffic congestion, and make the CBD more accessible for both motorists and pedestrians.
During the visit, Mvubu also received updates on the planned rehabilitation of Margaret Mncadi Avenue, which is set to begin later this month, as well as ongoing upgrades on uMngeni Road. Speaking after the inspection, Mvubu expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far. He was particularly encouraged that the work on Dr Pixley kaIsaka Seme Street and uMngeni Road remains on schedule and is expected to be completed before 15 June 2026. The improvements are expected to boost economic activity and enhance the daily travel experience for thousands of Durban residents.
