The search for a missing learner ended in heartbreak on Sunday morning when his body was recovered near Addington Beach, bringing a devastating close to days of anxious waiting for his family.

The boy, who disappeared while swimming at New Beach on Friday, had sparked a frantic search involving lifeguards, Metro Police, SAPS Search and Rescue, and the Coastal Patrol Unit. His parents had spent sleepless nights clinging to hope, revisiting the shoreline and pleading for his safe return.

Instead, they now face the unbearable task of identifying their child, as arrangements are made for them to view the body eThekwini Municipality Mayor, Cyril Xaba, praised the coordinated efforts of rescue teams who worked tirelessly under difficult conditions.

“We once again convey our condolences to the family of the deceased and hope that they will now be able to find closure,” he said. Beyond the official statements, the tragedy has left a deep emotional scar on the community, with many residents expressing sorrow for the grieving family.

Mayor Xaba also urged the public to exercise caution, warning against swimming at non-bathing beaches or during unsafe hours, as the city mourns a young life lost too soon.
