The province of KwaZulu-Natal and the Durban have officially begun preparations to host Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026, with Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille assuring that the sector will be in a far stronger position by 2027.
Speaking at the media launch held at the Nelson Mandela Terminal on Mahatma Gandhi Road, De Lille said the continent’s premier tourism trade show is key to unlocking Africa’s economic potential. Held under the theme “Unlimited Africa: Growing Africa’s Tourism Economy”, the event aims to drive demand, improve market access and strengthen collaboration across the tourism value chain.
De Lille emphasised that tourism investment signals confidence in South Africa’s economy, citing billions of rand in investment and millions generated in tax revenue. She noted that last year’s event contributed over 1,100 jobs and supported public services and infrastructure.
“We have the potential to do far better, and by 2027, we expect even greater outcomes,” she said.She also highlighted new features for 2026, including networking sessions, global speakers and a TikTok masterclass aimed at boosting digital tourism marketing.KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Rev Musa Zondi, said the province is fully prepared to host the event.
He revealed that R22.5 million will be spent over three days, supporting at least 15 small businesses and showcasing 10 creatives in a cultural exchange programme.“Africa’s Travel Indaba is more than a trade show—it connects us to buyers, media and global markets,” said Zondi.
The event is expected to position South Africa as a leading tourism destination, with De Lille stressing the country’s ambition to become Africa’s number one tourism hub.
