The eThekwini Metro Police Hiring Scandal: R420,000 Job Scam Leads to City Action

Desperate job seekers reportedly lost a total of R420,000 after being promised jobs with the Metro Police that never came through, leading eThekwini Municipality to strengthen its efforts against corruption in hiring practices.

City Manager Musa Mbhele confirmed these claims during a media briefing on Wednesday, where he discussed the measures being implemented following investigations into improper Metro Police appointments.

The City’s Integrity and Investigations Directorate released two reports. The Nexus Report, finished in 2020, looked into recruitment intakes from the 2017/18 and 2018/19 financial years and identified four appointments as irregular. Despite legal actions, these appointments were ultimately confirmed.

The more recent Isiqu Report, which examined recruitment for 2023/24, suggested disciplinary measures against four officials, including an Authorised Officer, two Human Capital staff members, and a Business Support employee.

Additionally, the report claims that one suspended employee defrauded the public by accepting money for jobs that did not exist.

A criminal case has been filed with SAPS under CAS 521/1/2026.

Mbhele stated that the City would take action whenever there are suspicions of misconduct.

Metro Police Commissioner Sbonelo Mchunu advised residents not to pay anyone who promises them a job.

The City emphasized that eThekwini jobs are never for sale and encouraged residents to report any suspected corruption by calling 0800 20 20 20.
