Newcastle — Amajuba District Municipality has reiterated its dedication to fighting gender-based violence (GBV) and uplifting women during a special evening event on 26 August 2026 at DUDSK B&B in Enyonini.
The gathering included Municipal Manager Mrs C.B. Mkhize, HRH Queen kaMayisela Zulu, First Lady Mrs Sbahle Mthembu, district councillors, and Sphumelele Mbambo, who engaged in meaningful discussions about women’s safety, dignity, empowerment, and access to support.
The program emphasized that tackling GBV requires ongoing efforts rather than just one-time awareness campaigns. It necessitates continuous investment in communities, accessible support services, responsive institutions, and a safe environment where women can openly discuss abuse, identify warning signs, and seek help without fear or shame.
The municipality also highlighted that service delivery goes beyond just infrastructure and basic services. A people-focused approach to local government must meet the social and human needs of residents, especially vulnerable groups, while fostering safer communities where individuals can live with dignity.
The evening also honored women who play a role in maintaining cultural values and traditions. Certificates were awarded to Onomehlo for their efforts in promoting and preserving cultural practices, and the oldest Zulu maiden present, aged 40, received a special trophy for her dedication to cultural traditions.
Through this event, Amajuba District Municipality aimed to enhance collective action against GBV while reminding women of their value, strength, and right to justice. Attendees were encouraged to leave feeling empowered to use their voices, seek help when necessary, and refuse to endure violence or hardship in silence.
