Entrepreneurs, fashion designers and content creators came together in Durban for the Purposefully Influencing Awards Media Networking Event, where small business owners pitched their businesses for funding and creatives showcased their work ahead of the annual awards.
Hosted in collaboration with Pepita Media, the event created a platform for entrepreneurs to connect with industry professionals, while fashion designers exhibited their collections and content creators expanded their networks.
The host, Kajal Maharaj said the initiative was created to empower women in different sectors by giving them access to resources that can help turn their ideas into successful businesses.
“Today is a culmination of women being able to pitch their businesses to actually receive funding and help to take their businesses forward. It’s really about empowering women to have the tools, the confidence, the guidance and the network so that they can take their ideas and make them into a reality and have a successful business,” she said.
Among the entrepreneurs was the founder of Nana Bakes, Paula Nomusa Zulu, who said her long-term goal is to open a physical store to improve her customers’ experience. She reflected on starting her business without equipment, capital or resources, saying faith and reinvesting every profit helped her build the brand.
Business owners attending the event said opportunities to present their businesses are important because they increase visibility and build confidence. One attendee said entrepreneurs should continue attending networking events even when results are not immediate.
“You might not see progress immediately, but you’re planting a seed for your business,” she said.
Fashion designers said the event also gave them an opportunity to exhibit their work, connect with potential clients and collaborate with other creatives in the industry.
As Women’s Month begins, many attendees said initiatives that create opportunities for entrepreneurs and creatives remain important in supporting women-led businesses and encouraging collaboration.
The event concluded with networking sessions, leaving participants with new connections, greater exposure and renewed motivation to grow their businesses and creative brands.
