South Africans are mourning famous DJ and fashion icon Maria McCloy, who died in a Johannesburg hospital on Tuesday night after heart failure.

She was 50 years old and had celebrated her birthday only days earlier. McCloy was born in the United Kingdom to a Mosotho mother and English father.

During the 1990s, she became an important figure in local music and fashion. She started Black Rage Productions and helped many young artists build their careers after apartheid.

Kwaito group TkZee said she believed in them from the beginning. Her family described her as warm, creative and inspiring. McCloy is survived by her mother and sisters, Thandiwe and Natasha. Funeral details have not been announced.
