An anti-immigration march continues to gather momentum in Durban, as protesters take to the streets demanding the deportation of undocumented immigrants and tighter controls on informal trade.
Demonstrators, carrying placards and chanting slogans, say they are frustrated by what they describe as a lack of enforcement of immigration laws and the impact of unregulated trading on local businesses. Many participants argue that stricter measures are needed to protect economic opportunities for South African citizens.
Among the prominent voices supporting the march is former broadcaster Ngizwe Mchunu, who addressed crowds and urged citizens to “stand up for the country.” Mchunu emphasised the need to prioritise the repatriation of undocumented foreign nationals, saying the issue has long been ignored.
“We must put South Africans first and ensure that our laws are respected,” he said, drawing both support and criticism from different quarters.While the march has remained largely peaceful, authorities are monitoring the situation closely to prevent any potential unrest. Police presence has been increased in key areas of the city, with officials urging demonstrators to protest within the bounds of the law.
The march highlights ongoing tensions around immigration, employment, and economic inclusion in South Africa, issues that continue to spark national debate.
