Rising Democratic Alliance figure Martin Meyer is setting his sights on the deputy leadership of the Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal, positioning himself as a candidate rooted in activism and policy-driven change.
Meyer’s political ambitions are deeply shaped by his advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and the protection of vulnerable children—causes he says are not abstract picking points, but lived realities for many South Africans. His early involvement with Amnesty International during his university years sharpened his understanding of injustice and the limits of activism alone.
“I realised that to effect real change, I needed to move beyond advocacy into a space where I could influence policy directly,” Meyer said.
That shift now defines his campaign. Aligning with the DA’s liberal-centrist values, Meyer is advocating for a dual strategy: consolidating urban support while extending the party’s reach into rural communities often left behind in political conversations.
He also acknowledged the human toll of economic hardship in these areas, stressing that grassroots empowerment must be more than a slogan.With coalition politics reshaping South Africa’s governance landscape, Meyer signalled a pragmatic approach—open to alliances grounded in constitutional values, while ruling out cooperation with ideologically incompatible parties.
If elected, he plans to professionalise governance readiness within the party, equipping leaders with clear action plans for their first 100 days in office.
