Tshwane – South African football icon Theophilus Khumalo has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Science by Tshwane University of Technology, recognising his outstanding contribution to sport and community development.

Affectionately known as “Doctor,” Khumalo rose to prominence as a gifted midfielder for Kaizer Chiefs and later became a key figure in the national team, Bafana Bafana. The university said the honour acknowledges not only his excellence on the pitch but also his role in advancing football in South Africa.Speaking at the ceremony, Khumalo expressed gratitude for the recognition. “This honour is bigger than me.

It belongs to every young player who dreams of making it in football,” he said.University officials praised his discipline, leadership, and continued involvement in mentoring young athletes. Sports analyst Kabelo Maseko noted that Khumalo’s influence extends beyond his playing days. “He remains a symbol of dedication and growth in South African football,” he said.

The honorary degree now means Khumalo can formally be addressed as Dr Doctor Khumalo, a title celebrated widely by fans and the sporting community.
