Four-Metre Waves Batter Durban Coast as Warning Sparks Concern

News

Durban’s coastline was on high alert on Monday as authorities warned of powerful waves reaching up to four metres, prompting concern among residents and visitors enjoying the long weekend.

The eThekwini Municipality issued a Level 1 damaging waves warning, following an alert from the South African Weather Service. The conditions, driven by a cold front and strong high-pressure system, are expected to produce waves between four and five metres along the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

Officials say the impact could include dangerous sea conditions, disruptions at small harbours, and potential damage to coastal infrastructure. Beach activities have also been affected, with authorities urging the public to stay away from the shoreline unless necessary.

Some residents have already witnessed the intensity of the ocean. “The waves are massive today, easily four metres,” said Sipho Dlamini, a regular beachgoer. “It looks beautiful, but you can tell it’s dangerous.”

Another local, Thandeka Mkhize, expressed concern for informal traders. “When the sea is like this, people stay away. It affects business, especially during a busy weekend.”

Fisherman Raj Naidoo added, “We’ve had to keep our boats on shore. It’s just not worth the risk.”

Emergency services remain on high alert, monitoring conditions closely. Residents are urged to follow safety guidance and report emergencies, as the city braces for continued rough seas through midweek.
