A major boost to crime-fighting efforts in KwaZulu-Natal was marked on Friday with the official handover of a new forensic science laboratory in Mayville.

Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Dean Macpherson formally handed over the state-of-the-art facility to Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia, signalling a renewed commitment to strengthening criminal investigations across the province.

The event was attended by key leaders including KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba, and KwaZulu-Natal SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Macpherson described the laboratory as a significant investment in justice and public safety, highlighting its role in ensuring that law enforcement agencies have the necessary infrastructure to process forensic evidence efficiently and securely.

“This facility represents our commitment to strengthening the backbone of criminal investigations,” he said.

The new laboratory is expected to drastically improve the processing and analysis of forensic evidence, a critical component in solving criminal cases. In the past, several forensic units operated from separate buildings, some of which were vulnerable to flooding—posing risks to the integrity of crucial evidence.

Premier Ntuli said the facility would serve communities across KwaZulu-Natal by reinforcing the criminal justice system and ensuring that victims receive the justice they deserve.

Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi emphasised that the laboratory will enhance forensic capabilities, including the analysis of DNA, firearms, and drug-related evidence, while maintaining strict standards for evidence handling.

Officials say the collaboration between departments marks a decisive step toward faster investigations and a more effective fight against crime in KwaZulu-Natal.
