Two foreign nationals were arrested during a coordinated compliance operation in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday, as authorities intensified efforts to enforce immigration laws.
The operation, led by Thamsanqa Ntuli alongside Community Safety and Liaison Head Nokuthula G Khanyile, formed part of the provincial initiative dubbed Operation Engangeni Ngesango Iyafohla. Conducted on 24 April 2026, the operation focused on ensuring adherence to the Immigration Act.
A multi-disciplinary team comprising the South African Police Service, Department of Home Affairs (immigration division), and the eThekwini Municipality targeted several spaza shops believed to be owned by foreign nationals.

During inspections, officials arrested two individuals who failed to produce valid documentation proving their legal status in the country. Authorities confirmed that the suspects were immediately handed over to immigration officials from Home Affairs for further processing, which may include detention pending verification or possible deportation.
Provincial officials say the operation is part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with national laws, promote fair business practices, and address community concerns around undocumented foreign nationals operating informal businesses.
Further operations are expected to continue across the province in the coming weeks, with authorities warning that non-compliance with immigration regulations will result in strict enforcement action.
