A suspected hitman was killed during a shootout with police in Pinetown in the early hours of Wednesday morning, following a coordinated intelligence-driven operation.

The 41-year-old man, who had been on law enforcement’s radar for his alleged involvement in more than ten murder cases, mostly on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, was tracked to a hideout in the area. Authorities believe he was preparing to carry out another hit within hours, reportedly targeting officials from the Umdoni Local Municipality.

The operation was conducted jointly by members of the SAPS eThekwini District Trio Crimes Unit, SAPS KwaZulu-Natal Crime Intelligence, Durban Metro Police Trio Crimes Unit, and the Durban Metro Police K9 Unit. Acting on gathered intelligence, officers moved in to apprehend the suspect.

According to police reports, the suspect opened fire as officers attempted to arrest him, prompting an exchange of gunfire. He was fatally wounded during the confrontation.

Police confirmed that multiple firearms were recovered at the scene, which will undergo ballistic testing as part of ongoing investigations.

The incident highlights continued efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb violent crime and dismantle organised hit networks operating within the province.
