Maskandi Boycott Call Casts Shadow Over Metro FM Music Awards

News

Tensions are rising ahead of the upcoming Metro FM Music Awards 2026 after
Bhinca Nation President Ngizwe Mchunu called on Maskandi artists and fans to
boycott the event, accusing the station of exploiting the genre.
Mchunu said that Metro FM does not support Maskandi music on its platform despite
nominating artists for awards. “They view this genre as the music of uncivilised
people,” he said, adding that invited artists are often interviewed without having their
music played.
He further argued that the station’s actions contradict policies of the Independent
Communications Authority of South Africa, claiming the nominations are a way to
profit from the genre without genuine support. His criticism was also directed at
Metro FM personality Tbo Touch.
The awards are set to take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium’s People’s Park on April
25, as part of a three-year hosting deal with the eThekwini Municipality.

Despite the controversy, SABC executive Nada Wotshela and Durban Mayor Cyril
Xaba have praised the event’s return, highlighting its cultural significance. Nominees
include leading Maskandi artists such as Khuzani, Siya Ntuli, Mzukulu, Umafikizolo,
and Simonofu.
