Durban Prepares for Easter Rush with Extensive Safety Measures

News

Durban is gearing up for a significant influx of visitors this Easter holiday, with city officials anticipating over 1.2 million people to arrive at the coastal destination. Mayor Cyril Xaba has reassured both residents and tourists that a thorough safety and tourism strategy is in place.

During a media briefing, Xaba mentioned that the municipality is building on the achievements of the 2025 festive season to ensure a safe, lively, and economically advantageous holiday period.

The city expects an economic uplift of more than R2.6 billion, with hotel occupancy rates estimated at 62% and around 16,000 temporary jobs likely to be created.

A primary focus is on visitor safety. Over 1,000 law enforcement personnel, including Metro Police and SAPS, will be deployed throughout the city. Authorities plan to implement continuous patrols, roadblocks, and compliance checks to combat crime, drunk driving, and unsafe vehicles.

Durban’s beaches, a significant attraction, will remain open, with 23 designated as safe for swimming. Approximately 200 lifeguards will be present daily along the coast, supported by ongoing water quality assessments. The city will also feature a busy schedule of events, including concerts, cultural displays, and family-friendly activities at popular sites. Xaba called for public cooperation, expressing confidence that Durban will provide a safe and unforgettable Easter experience for everyone.
