As World TB Day approaches, the residents of eThekwini are reminded that every statistic represents a personal story — a mother striving for her health, a young individual eager to return to school, a family clinging to hope.
Tomorrow, Executive Mayor Cyril Xaba, serving as Chairperson of the eThekwini District AIDS Council, will lead the City’s official observance in Ntuzuma. This gathering is more than just a scheduled event — it is a time for reflection, unity, and renewed resolve.
With the global theme “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver,” the commemoration goes beyond policies and programs. It focuses on people — those who manage treatment daily, healthcare workers visiting homes to ensure no one is overlooked, and communities realizing that early testing can be the key to survival.
Tuberculosis remains one of the most lethal infectious diseases globally, and South Africa bears a significant burden. However, TB is both preventable and treatable — a fact that brings both urgency and hope.
In many homes throughout eThekwini, the battle against TB is very personal. It is expressed in the gentle reminders from neighbors encouraging medication adherence. It is visible in clinics where long lines are met with patience and strength. It is experienced in the bravery of survivors who share their stories so that others may seek help sooner.
The Municipality, in collaboration with health partners and community organizations, continues to enhance prevention strategies, broaden access to treatment, and support those impacted. However, as tomorrow’s commemoration will highlight, ending TB is not solely the responsibility of institutions — it is a collective duty.
As the community gathers at Ntuzuma A-Section Community Hall, the message is unmistakable: ending TB is achievable, but only if commitment is paired with compassion, and action is fueled by the understanding that every effort counts.
