Mounting allegations of deep-rooted corruption within South Africa’s law enforcement agencies have intensified political pressure, as Julius Malema calls for the removal of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
The Economic Freedom Fighters leader made the demand as Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigates claims by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that elements of the South African Police Service have been captured by powerful interests. The allegations, described by insiders as “explosive,” suggest systemic interference in policing and possible political shielding of wrongdoing.
Mchunu, who has been on special leave since June 2025, faces growing scrutiny over his alleged links to the controversy. Malema argues that accountability must include both his removal and the recovery of public funds paid during his absence.
The committee’s inquiry is expected to test the credibility of multiple witnesses, including senior police officials and political figures. Analysts warn the outcome could expose entrenched patronage networks within law enforcement structures.
While Mchunu has not publicly responded in detail to the latest calls, his allies maintain that due process must prevail. The committee is set to table its recommendations in Parliament, a move that could trigger significant political fallout and reshape the country’s policing leadership.
