Tensions are rising within the African National Congress in eThekwini, as ordinary members fear internal divisions could derail the party’s future ahead of a crucial regional conference.
In communities across the metro, branch members say uncertainty and delays are creating frustration on the ground. With only a handful of branches completing leadership processes, many feel shut out of decisions that will shape candidate lists for the upcoming local government elections.
Supporters aligned to contenders Thabani Nyawose and Nkosenhle Madlala have accused the regional task team of deliberately slowing preparations. For some grassroots members, the issue goes beyond politics — it is about having their voices heard.
“We just want a fair process,” said one branch member, who asked not to be named. “People are losing hope because nothing is moving.”
The regional task team has dismissed the allegations, urging unity and warning against rumours that could deepen divisions.
Political analysts say prolonged infighting risks alienating voters, especially after the party’s recent electoral setbacks in the city.
For many loyal supporters, the stakes are personal. “This organisation is our home,” another member said. “We want to rebuild it, not watch it fall apart.”
