Eastern Cape – Five individuals lost their lives and around 60 others were hurt in a tragic head-on crash involving a bus and a VW Polo on the N6 between KuGompo, close to East London, and Stutterheim on
Sunday night. Authorities reported that the bus was carrying about 60 Zimbabwean nationals and was heading towards Stutterheim when it collided with the Polo coming from the opposite direction.
The crash was extremely violent, leaving the smaller vehicle wedged under the bus. Emergency rescue
teams arrived quickly and used the jaws of life to extract the bodies of the five people who were in the
car. All five were pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics treated many injured passengers from the bus before taking them to local hospitals for additional medical attention. Some suffered moderate to serious injuries.
Police have initiated cases of culpable homicide along with reckless and negligent driving. Investigations
into what caused the crash are still in progress. Eastern Cape Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a swift recovery, urging drivers to follow road regulations.
