Almost eleven years after Senzo Meyiwa was fatally shot, the North Gauteng High Court remains a space where grief, hope, and tension quietly intersect.
On Friday, the ongoing Senzo Meyiwa murder trial entered yet another emotional phase as the defense started to present its side of the story.
For the families of both the murdered football star and the accused individuals, every piece of testimony carries the burden of years spent searching for answers. Meyiwa, the cherished former captain of Orlando Pirates and the national team Bafana Bafana, was killed in 2014.
His death sent shockwaves through South Africa and left a significant gap in the football community. Within the courtroom, the accused have begun to contest the state’s version of events. Bongani Ntanzi was questioned about images retrieved from his phone, while Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya claimed he endured harsh treatment during his arrest.
The trial has also brought attention to singer Kelly Khumalo, who has been mentioned in court but has not faced any charges. For Meyiwa’s supporters and family, these proceedings represent more than just legal discussions. They signify another step in a lengthy quest for truth, accountability, and possibly, one day, closure.
